Reminder: Avoid Crossing at Corners of Walnut and Watt

Date: January 29, 2017 Author: Cathy Gibson Categories: News & Events

Student safety is, of course, paramount and until we can improve the situation at the corners of Walnut and Watt, please encourage your student(s) to cross with Steve at the intersection of Watt and LeMarchant streets.

Please see below for an excerpt from the December newsletter:

Intersection at Walnut and Watt

I have been working with a small group of parents in trying to make the intersection at Walnut St. and Watt St. much safer for our students. It is an involved process with the city and the police department, as well as our councillor Waye Mason. Headway is being made but it is unknown what the end result will be; crosswalk, 4 way stop or crossing guard. I have also been in touch with the gentleman who installs the crossing flags that you see around the city. I was turned down for flags at that crosswalk due to criteria for flag placement.

In the meantime, please ensure you are not crossing Watt Street at that intersection with your children. Please walk down the sidewalk to cross with the crossing guard, Steve. We need to model safe behaviour. I have asked the students to only cross at the crosswalk and not use the doors close to the intersection at Walnut and Watt so they won’t be tempted to cross Watt St. We have had 3 near misses in the last few weeks and the mandate is to keep the students safe. We need your assistance and gratefully thank you for helping us.
