Walk-A-Thon 2016-17

We’re changing’ it up this year with a HALLOWEEN THEME - yep, we’re going to walk the neighbourhood in costumes!!

What is the LMST Annual Walk-a-Thon?

As part of the physical education curriculum all students at LMST (whether or not they collect pledges) will participate in a school Walk-a-Thon. Through this activity students will collect food for the food bank and raise money for charity and our school.

During the Walk-a-Thon students will walk throughout the LMST neighbourhood for about an hour. The route snakes through more than 10 streets and 5 city blocks and students’ progress will be monitored by LMST staff and our Halifax Regional Police School Liaison Officer..

Students are encouraged to canvass friends and family to get pledges for cash donations prior to the event. For each sponsor of $1 or more the student receives a ballot for a prize draw.

While en route, students will collect food bank donations from our community neighbours who will have received notices requesting they place non-perishable food items (marked “LMST”) on their porch or steps. Students are also encouraged to bring in a non-perishable food item if they wish.

When is the Walk-a-Thon?

Our 2nd Annual Walk-a-Thon will kick off on Monday, October 31st, after lunch.

Why are our students involved in this Walk-A-Thon?

This school activity supports several goals including:

  • encouraging physical activity among our student community;
  • engaging all our students in a philanthropic activity and our Grade 6 students in particular;
  • supporting our local food bank;
  • raising money for a charity selected by the Grade 6 students; and
  • raising money for school items not covered by our school board budget. These items include specialized classroom furniture, Phys Ed items for use in our new, differently-sized gym, balls for students to use at recess, Point 2 Views (USB documents cameras) for each classroom, extra resource materials for teachers, etc.,

What do the students need to do to ensure they may participate?

Students

  • must return a completed and signed permission slip/volunteer request form found at the bottom of the information sheet
  • must return a completed HRSB Consent Form for School Trip  (separate sheet attached to pledge form)
  • are encouraged to collect pledges prior to the event
  • are encouraged to bring in a non-perishable food item prior to the event
